So we held a little contest in last months newsletter and I’m happy to congratulate Bruce on his winning entry. Here was the question “which dp song is your favorite and why?” Here was Bruce’s reply:

Hi Dave – it is impossible to pick a favorite song, so I’m going to say all of your songs? You have a unique style of worship that allows me to enter into the presence of the Lord differently than when I hear our worship team minister. It shows the mult-faceted sides of our Lord. I pray the person that most needs to win will!

So this got me thinking. First off, i’m hugely thankful that the music that I’ve created allows Bruce and a lot of others to actually engage deeper in worship but as i thought about this sentence “it shows the multi-faceted sides of the Lord” it got me thinking about modern worship music, classic hymns and secular music.

First question. How do you worship, what do you worship to? I wrote a post a few months back about worshiping to the songs of Bruce Springsteen from his latest album “wrecking ball”. (go buy it if you haven’t yet). There’s a large debate in the christian community about whether or not contemporary worship is real worship music and whether the classic hymns should be the “true” worship songs. this debate has been going on for years, probably decades. so many of us get so caught up in the style of worship that we forget why we’re worshiping.

Second question. Why are we worshiping?

We worship to be drawn closer to our God, to be drawn closer into His presence so that we can commune with Him in a way that is not possible through any other form of worship. Musical worship is spoken about countless times in the bible, open up any Psalm and you’re bound to hear David rambling on about harps, flutes, lyres and other musical instruments of the day. It’s not the type of music that the issue, it’s how and why you worship. Why? Because the multi-faceted sides of the Lord make me long for deeper walks with Him daily.

I’ll never know Him, truly know Him and that’s a good thing. That’s what keeps me so very interested in finding new ways to worship Him. New ways to express my desire to be closer to Him. Do I stumble? Daily. Do I fall and get back up again? Daily. But i worship a God who forgives, who loves me for who i am and who cares so much about me. He’s a jealous God, someone who wants me all then time. I push Him away, but He keeps coming back because He’s a God that doesn’t give up. A God that won’t give up on us.

There are so many sides of God that i can’t even begin to explain….and the beauty of it all is that each one of us sees so many different sides of Him. That’s what makes it so cool. We hear a song that really a connects with us and it’s literally God speaking to us and using that song to talk to us. To tell us something.

So rather than debate if one song is better than another. If this hymn is more “worshipful” than what’s on the radio today. I’d rather look for the multi-faceted sides of the Lord in everything that I see and hear.

Do this. Do it daily. Search your daily routine for places, faces, sounds, songs and words that God is using to connect with you. They are there, we just need to be aware of them. To be aware of the sides of God that we’re not used to seeing.

Praying that your week is eye-opening.

THE WEEKLY WALK – 2/6/13

hey everybody, hope you are well & the new year is starting off good. it’s been a challenging new year so far for me to say the least.

first off thanks to everyone who came out to all of the shows in january. we saw so many new faces and played for so many new crowds, it was absolutely fantastic. great nights of worship. thanks to all of your generosity we had 22 kids get sponsored in the last month via @worldvision. really awesome stuff. thank you.

i was reading tonight from the gospel of Luke and one thing stood out to me, this verse: Luke 12:34 – “34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Made me think, where is my treasure? What is the one thing or things that i constantly crave? Where do i go at the end of the day? Well the proper answer to that question is….God. Right? Isn’t that the christian answer to this question? That’s what Jesus was going for…i think? Let’s be honest. I can’t say that that is the answer that i have to that question. For me it should be God but…it’s my family, my music, my work, my relationship with my wife so many other things. So many things that i put before God. So many things that get in the way of God. Where is my treasure? What is my treasure? Oh, that verse cut like a knife tonight.

To answer this question we need to have time to think about the question. That’s the catch. There’s no time to think about the question. I was listening to an interview on a podcast recently. It was an interview with an artist that i really respect. The question came up about after all of the grammy’s won, all of the stuff that this guy has accomplished, what is the biggest challenge he still has to face?

His answer was simple. The biggest challenge he has to face is finding the ability to rest. He said that the Lord wants us to rest and just breathe. We move all the time, our brains never stop. God just wants to be with us and we move too quickly. God wants to speak to us and we never have time to listen. It’s so hard to find that place of rest but there’s a way to rest and still be very successful and get things done.

I almost drove off the road. Time. Time is the one thing that gets stolen from us every single day. Every single moment. Time is the one thing that never stops and the one thing that we so easily let get away from us. The one thing we so easily give away.

So i asked the question before, or actually Jesus asked the question in Luke. Where is your treasure, because where your treasure is there your heart will be also. Finding that treasure starts with finding the time to actually find that treasure. Take the time to seek the kingdom of God. Take the time to seek His face. Seek His will in your life and when we do that, He will reveal to us the treasure in our hearts.

TAKE TWO MINUTES:

Take two minutes, go over your pictures on your phone, are they pictures with friends and family or are the grand majority just you holding your phone?

Take two minutes, Look At your emails are the majority of your emails about your family, wife, life partner, friends or work?

Take two minutes, look at your phone log, who were your last 5 phone calls?

Take two minutes, what did you do today? Did you help anyone in need?

Take two minutes, how much money do you have in your wallet? When was the last time you gave money to charity?

Take two minutes, do you talk to others or talk to others about you?

Take to minutes, did you tell your mother you love her, did you tell your father you love him?

Take two minutes, think what would your co workers say about you?

Take two minutes, have you taught anything useful to anyone this week?

Take two minutes, when was the last time you wrote a letter?

Two minutes that’s all the time it should take you to read this but it should really make you think for days what can I do in two minutes, in two minutes you can revalue your life and make it better.

Take two minutes and say a prayer. Say a prayer for your country, for your state, for your town, for your neighborhood. Say a prayer that reaches deeper than just help me do this, help me do that, give me this, give me that. Take two minutes and say a prayer for someone that you really don’t pray for, that you really don’t know. Now take two minutes and say a prayer for a child that needs help because they are starving, needing clean water, needing food, a child that you’ll probably never meet but a child that you can pray for.

Finally take two minutes and thank God for the life that you have.
