Welcome to the first day of this walkthrough of the album The Hymns Project by davepettigrew.  In these next few days you'll get some behind the scenes videos, stories, devotions and worship videos that will help you dive deeper into the songs on the album.

Hymns have always held a special place in my heart.  I remember when I was a kid sitting down in the back row of the old Lutheran Bretheran church in Cranston, RI that i grew up in.  I'd listen to my grandmother play these hymns each and every Sunday.  I found them boring as every 8 year old kid would. But as I grew older I started to realize the truths, the promises and the genuine passion that was contained in each every one of these songs.  

These hymns were written in times of distress, in times of pain.  They were written when faith seemed lost, when darkness was thicker than the light.

I hope you enjoy the album, the videos and the devotions contained here.  

As the songwriter said, "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine." May we hold that truth near and dear to our hearts each and every day.

What a Friend we Have in Jesus was written by Joseph Scriven and Charles Converse.  The song started out as a poem that Scriven wrote for his mother who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. Little did he know how comforting the song would be for so many.

His lyrics in the first verse alone reflect the incredible privilege of knowing Jesus.  Knowing that in the midst of our struggle, grief and pain, our God continues to hear our prayers and walk with us on the journey.

Philippians 4:6 says this, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”   The lyric in the song says "all our sins and griefs to bear!"

We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.

Prayer is a conversation with God. God, the Father, wants to hear the prayers of His children.  He wants to have interaction with us.  We have this friend in Jesus, His Son.  Take a minute to read through the lyrics on the left and maybe take a minute to pray through them.  Spend time with Jesus today.

Great is Thy faithfulness is a song written by Thomas Chisholm and William Runyan.  Chisolm wrote the song as a poem in 1923 about God's faithfulness over his lifetime.

The Biblical lyrics reference Lamentations 3:22-23 that says this, "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

The latter verse reminds us that the Lord's unbreakable love, expressed in deeds of mercy, is “new every morning: great is your faithfulness.”

The hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” beautifully captures the wonder of these convictions about God in stirring word and tune.

Today, rest in the faithfulness of the Lord.  Rest in the mercy.  Rest in the unchanging love of our Lord.
